The meaning of the title 531 represents the intervals (in semitones) used in the main theme, where there is a main pitch, B3, and other notes with those intervals revolve around it. This makes up the main theme within a one measure idea. Throughout the piece the theme goes through variations and transformation. The piece gradually falls apart, first apparent with the interruptions of glissing ideas in the strings. The middle section then uses the gliss effects to create Shepard tones. The Shepard tone effect causes the ear to think that the pitch is constantly falling without it actually moving. This is done with several chromatic movements happening at different points on a loop, so it has consistent movement. While this happens, the original melody is portrayed in a fractured form that eventually regains in stability. The final section then once again, utilizes the motivic material of the main theme, ending in an agitated state.
