As a composer, I constantly hear music. I don't have to be audibly hearing music in order for it to be stuck in my head. Often times there are several melodies and rhythms going on all at once to the point of just sounding like chaos in my head, but sometimes specific rhythms and/or pitches come through strongly. During the time I needed to compose a string quartet for one of my classes at NYU, the melody in this piece (specifically the rhythms) kept repeating in my head over and over. I finally decided to use the material my head had on loop to create Intrusive Melody No.1. Since I know this instance will occur throughout my musical career, I have decided to dedicate a series dedicated to these times where specific rhythmic and/or melodic ear worms get stuck in my head. This first piece begins what might soon be a collection of intrusive melodies that will repeat in my head until I turn them into music.
